![]() ![]() Apple should spell out its update policies for older versions of macOS, as Microsoft does, rather than relying on its current hand-wavy release timing-macOS Mojave's last security update was back in July, for example, meaning that even though it was still officially-unofficially supported until Monterey was released in October, it missed out on a bunch of security patches released for Big Sur and Catalina in September. But it's also time for better communication on this subject. The simple solution for this problem is that Apple should actually provide all of the security updates for all of the operating systems that it is actively updating. ![]() But in the case of this privilege escalation bug, we have an example of an actively exploited vulnerability that was present in multiple versions of the operating system but for months had only actually been patched in one of them. According to Hernandez, the vulnerability at issue here didn't seem to affect macOS Mojave, despite its lack of a patch. You can explain away some of this disparity-many (though not all!) of the WebKit vulnerabilities in that list were patched in a separate Safari update, and some bugs may affect newer features that aren't actually present in older versions of the operating system. He has made a habit of comparing the security content of different macOS patches and has found that there are many vulnerabilities that only get patched in the newest versions of macOS (and it looks like iOS 15 may be the same way, though iOS 14 is still being actively supported with security updates). Advertisementīut as Long points out on Twitter and on the Intego Mac Security Blog, that isn't always the case. The normal supposition, and one that I factor in when making upgrade recommendations in our yearly macOS reviews, is that "supported" means "supported," and that you don't need to install a new OS and deal with new-OS bugs just to benefit from Apple's latest security fixes. This policy isn't spelled out anywhere, but the informal "N+2" software support timeline has been in place since the very early days of Mac OS X (as you can imagine, it felt much more generous when Apple went two or three years between macOS releases instead of one year). But for the benefit of people who don't want to install a new operating system on day one, or who can't install the new operating system because their Mac isn't on the supported hardware list, Apple provides security-only updates for older macOS versions for around two years after they're replaced. Josh Long (the JoshMeister) November 11, 2021įor context: every year, Apple releases a new version of macOS. ![]() □ randomly choosing which vulns you patch for 2 prior #macOS endangers customers. NOT mentioned: This was □234 days‼️ after #Apple patched the same vuln for Big Sur. ![]() Mentioned in writeup ( ), this wasn’t patched for Catalina until Sept 23. That's a 234-day gap, despite the fact that Apple was and is still actively updating both versions of macOS. The problem, as noted by Intego chief security analyst Joshua Long, is that the exact same CVE was patched in macOS Big Sur version 11.2, released all the way back on February 1, 2021. Vulnerability is discovered in the wild, vulnerability is reported to the company that is responsible for the software, and vulnerability is patched, all in the space of about a month. On the surface, this incident is a relatively unremarkable example of security updates working as they ought to. Both of those posts have more information on the implications of this exploit-it hasn't been confirmed, but it certainly appears to be yet another front in China's effort to crack down on civil liberties in Hong Kong-but for our purposes, let's focus on how Apple keeps its operating systems up to date, because that has even wider implications. According to Google's Erye Hernandez, the vulnerability ( labeled CVE-2021-30869) was reported to Apple in late August of 2021 and patched in macOS Catalina security update 2021-006 on September 23. News is making the rounds today, both via a write-up in Vice and a post from Google's Threat Analysis Group, of a privilege escalation bug in macOS Catalina that was being used by "a well-resourced" and "likely state-backed" group to target visitors to pro-democracy websites in Hong Kong. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() This is to say nothing of the sheer strength of This Place…’s remaining arsenal. Whichever side of the coin we land on, the record brings a brutally human touch as our anguished preacher cries out “Oh God I wish you were here!” between the slow-burning walls of Fall For Me this, and many other examples bring this unearthly collective very close to home. On one hand, perhaps the more down-to-earth lines can appear disingenuous due to Vessel’s otherworldly visage but in equal parts, it gives us a blank canvas to attach and emphasise with as we put ourselves in the place of our masked messenger. This is a lyrically potent album, not unlike their previous work, and there is still much to be debated on whether their faceless nature allows greater resonance for such features. Starting with a timid but rich piano line, Atlantic floods the soundscape with desperate longing and a heavy heart before reaching into the band’s portfolio of spacious and atmospheric chugs a la Deftones to round off the album’s first great stride. Wrapped in its various nautical thematics – artwork and lyrics included – This Place…’s greater leaning on ballad-play and melancholy makes for a greater whole than Sundowning’s more variegated arrangements which is no slight on such album. In a way, this feels like a more congruent piece of scripture than forgone writings. What remains ever consistent, on a musical basis, is Sleep Token’s nack for complex arrangements and superb penmanship both on a lyrical and songwriting front. Simply put the band is leading the clergy to a place where ‘heaviness’ and ‘weight’ is no longer drawn from sinister guitar play but in the might of the band’s ability to conjure emotional strain. While the band still betrays the expected sounds from their spectral appearance and haunting mannerisms, This Place… possesses a heaviness of another kind and one that perhaps runs deeper than their first chapter. ![]() These faint whispers, glimpses into the future, reveal a familiar choir of crooning, emotionally charged vocals, bold but estranged pop tangents and an underlying heaviness that harnesses a force of emotion as much as the instrumental spectrum. Gone is the ritualistic, week-by-week, reveal of the band’s phenomenal Sundowning and, instead, we were blessed with inviting morsels telling of a more reserved, more focused entity. Two years on from their first full-length service and, whether it be a musical choice or the will of the supposed deity, This Place Will Become Your Tomb reveals Sleep Token in a far more raw, more vulnerable light.Īs is to be expected, Sleep Token continues their penchant for mystery as they allow their divine plan to unfurl with the mere release of their sophomore record itself being characteristically laced in enigma. In matrimony between soul-crushing vocal performances and key work with the ruthlessness of metalcore-esque breakdowns, the faceless prophets have proven time after time that their sermons deserve open ears. As a mouthpiece for the deity simply known as ‘Sleep’ – for no modern tongue equivalent exists – Sleep Token have appeared painted, masked and robed from 2016 and, through numerous EPs and a breakthrough debut, have amassed a devout legion of Sleep-fearing followers. The occult, anonymity, deities and illusive lore, the world of metal has heard it all yet none can stand head and shoulders above the masters of mythic, Sleep Token. Despite the fact that hypersensitivity to sound might turn migraine patients off to music in the throws of an episode, Mauskop says "studies that prove pleasant music relieves pain more effectively compared to patients who sat quietly listening to nothing for 20 minutes." Why? Because music that you, personally, find to be soothing could minimize the effects of a migraine's wrath on your body through a series of de-stressing reactions. Mauskop doesn't scoff at all sound therapy, however. "Binaural sounds have no scientific basis, no studies prove they work for migraines, so I do not recommend them for people who are currently experiencing a migraine," Mauskop says, adding that he believes most people would not be able to withstand the sounds for long anyway.
